Minister responding: Hon R. Saffioti
Parliament: 40 Session: 1
Answered on

REGIONAL AIRFARES
441. Hon ROBIN SCOTT to the minister representing the Minister for Transport:
I ask my question with the knowledge that the minister is certain to support the goal of cheaper airfares for Western Australians.
      (1) Does the minister agree that greater competition and lower airfares are likely to result from international airlines flying new routes such as Singapore–Broome–Kalgoorlie–Adelaide, Hong Kong–Karratha–Kalgoorlie–Melbourne or Denpasar–Karratha–Perth?
      (2) What action is the minister taking, or will take, to persuade the federal government to give Kalgoorlie–Boulder Airport full status as an international airport?
      (3) What action is the minister taking, or will take, to persuade the federal government to give Karratha Airport full status as an international airport?
      (4) Will the minister ensure that Kalgoorlie–Boulder Airport rather than Cunderdin Airport will be considered as the official alternative airport for Perth?
Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. The following information has been provided by the Minister for Transport.
(1)–(4) The Economics and Industry Standing Committee is investigating regional airfares. I support its work in this effort and look forward to its recommendations. I do not intend to fuel speculation about airfares and potential routes at this time.
