Question Without Notice No. 830 asked in the Legislative Council on 21 September 2022 by Hon Tjorn Sibma

Parliament: 41 Session: 1

SECTORAL EMISSIONS REDUCTION STRATEGIES

830. Hon TJORN SIBMA to the minister representing the Minister for Climate Action:

I refer again to the government's sectoral emissions reduction strategies policy.

(1) Has the number of individual sectors requiring the development of a SERS been finalised?

(2) If yes to (1), what are these sectors and how will they be determined?

(3) If no to (1), when will these sectors be finalised and how will they be determined?

(4) What consultation has occurred with industry on the SERS process post the 10 May roundtable event facilitated by the private consultancy company Pollination?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. The following answer is provided on behalf the Minister for Climate Action.

(1)–(3) The strategies address all sources of emissions including electricity; industry, including resources and manufacturing; transport; buildings; agriculture; waste; and land use. The individual sectors for sectoral emissions reduction strategies have not been finalised.

(4) Following the industry round table hosted by the Minister for Climate Action on 10 May 2022, targeted consultation commenced in July 2022 with peak industry groups including the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia; Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association; Chamber of Commerce and Industry Western Australia; and Association of Mining and Exploration Companies Inc. Consultation on the demand assessment for the south west interconnected system commenced in September 2022 and will inform the electricity component of the SERS. Additional consultation with peak groups, research, community and environment non-government organisations and companies that have operations in Western Australia with significant greenhouse gas emissions will occur through the remainder of 2022 and into early 2023.
