Question Without Notice No. 321 asked in the Legislative Council on 9 May 2018 by Hon Colin Tincknell

Minister responding: Hon R. Saffioti
Parliament: 40 Session: 1
Answered on 9 May 2018

METRONET — RAILCARS
      321. Hon COLIN TINCKNELL to the minister representing the Minister for Transport:
I refer to Metronet. I note the recent media statement dated 22 April 2018 that refers to the 50 per cent local manufacturing component in the initial delivery of 102 new railcars for the Metronet project.
(1) Does the local manufacture of the railcars include local employees and local sourcing of parts?
(2) Has the government previously sourced locally manufactured railcars?
      (3) What happens in the event that the government receives no local tenders for the manufacture of the railcars?
Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.
      (1) Yes.
      (2) No. The previous government achieved only a two per cent local content component in the manufacturing of its railcars.
      (3) Given the extensive industry engagement undertaken by this government, it is confident that there will be a number of tender responses that comply with the requirements for local assembly of railcars.
