Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 85 asked in the Legislative Council on 20 February 2019 by Hon Donna Faragher

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION — SCHOOL MAINTENANCE BUDGET

85. Hon DONNA FARAGHER to the Minister for Education and Training:

I refer to the Department of Education's school maintenance budget.

(1) For each of the following school years, what was the total amount of funding allocated, or expected to be allocated, for school maintenance in public schools, excluding funding to respond to emergency faults and repair work —

(a) 2016;

(b) 2017;

(c) 2018;

(d) 2019;

(e) 2020;

(f) 2021; and

(g) 2022?

(2) For each of the years referred to in (1), what was the total budget made available, or is estimated to be made available, to respond to emergency faults and repair work at public schools?

Hon SUE ELLERY replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

(1)–(2) Funding is allocated by financial years. The member should note that there is a single allocation for maintenance, which includes the cost of repairs and faults. The table that follows provides expenditure on faults and repairs for the completed financial years included in the total allocation.

I seek leave to have the next part of the answer, which is in tabular form, incorporated into Hansard.

Leave granted.

The following material was incorporated —

Financial Year

Total Maintenance allocation ($ million)

Expenditure on Faults/repairs ($ million)

2015–16

155.6

59.1

2016–17

117.1

66.0

2017–18

109.7

64.6

2018–19

128.7

2019–20

Not yet allocated

2020–21

Not yet allocated

2021–22

Not yet allocated

I point out that for the forward years of 2019–20, 2020–21 and 2021–22, it has not yet been allocated. The amount for 2015–16 is significantly higher due to the one-off high-priority safety and preventive maintenance allocation of $15.66 million and additional funds from the recurrent budget as a result of schools' under-expenditure.
