Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 592 asked in the Legislative Council on 16 June 2020 by Hon Peter Collier

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

PLANNING REFORM — LOCAL GOVERNMENT (UNIFORM LOCAL PROVISIONS) REGULATIONS

592. Hon PETER COLLIER to the minister representing the Minister for Planning:

I ask this question on behalf of Hon Tjorn Sibma, who is away on urgent parliamentary business.

I refer to the minister's identification of amendments to the Local Government (Uniform Local Provisions) Regulations 1996 as being critical to resolving conflicts with Main Roads Western Australia in the planning system.

(1) What progress has been made in making these amendments?

(2) What consultation is required and what assistance from the Minister for Local Government is necessary?

(3) When will the minister complete the task?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank Hon Tjorn Sibma for some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided to me by the Minister for Planning.

(1)–(3) Streamlining and coordinating development approval pathways and removing unnecessary red tape are key elements of the government's planning reform agenda to support Western Australia's economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Some preliminary work has been undertaken to identify modifications to the Local Government (Uniform Local Provisions) Regulations 1996. Preliminary discussions have been held between senior officers of the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage, the Western Australian Planning Commission and Main Roads Western Australia. Any amendments to the regulations would need to be progressed by the Minister for Local Government in consultation with the Minister for Planning.
