Question Without Notice No. 1218 asked in the Legislative Council on 4 November 2020 by Hon Tjorn Sibma

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

CLIMATE CHANGE — EMISSIONS TARGET

1218. Hon TJORN SIBMA to the Minister for Environment:

I refer to the state government's publication ''Climate Change in Western Australia: Issues Paper—September 2019'', and specifically to the objective stated on page 3 of the document —

The Government of Western Australia has committed to working with all sectors of the economy to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

(1) Is the state government still committed to achieve that net zero emissions target?

(2) If yes to (1), in the absence of a published new climate change policy, by what specific means and by which specific dates does the state government intend to set Western Australia on this trajectory?

(3) Will the state government release its climate change policy before the election?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

(1)–(3) The McGowan government has an aspiration of net zero emissions for Western Australia by 2050. The government is committed to working with all sectors of the economy to achieve this goal. The Western Australian climate policy is being finalised following feedback from the community on the climate change in Western Australia issues paper. The policy will be released this year.
