Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 538 asked in the Legislative Council on 6 September 2017 by Hon Dr Steve Thomas

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

HYDRAULIC FRACTURING — REGULATIONS
      538. Hon Dr STEVE THOMAS to the minister representing the Minister for Mines and Petroleum:
I refer to the government's announcement on Tuesday, 5 September 2017, of a ban on hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, in the south west, Peel and Perth metropolitan regions in both a statement to this house and in a media statement, in which the statement to this house referred directly to the government implementing ''regulations'' while the media statement did not mention regulations.
      (1) Will the government introduce regulations to ban fracking in the south west, Peel and Perth metropolitan region?
(2) If so, when will the government introduce these regulations?
(3) If not, why not?
Hon ALANNAH MacTIERNAN replied:
I thank the member for the question. The Minister for Mines and Petroleum has provided the following information —
(1) Yes.
(2) Drafting of the delegated legislation is underway and it will be introduced as soon as practicable.
(3) Not applicable.
