CAMP SCHOOLS —
FAIRBRIDGE WA
842. Hon DONNA FARAGHER to the Minister for Education and
Training:
I refer to the answer given to
question without notice 819 asked on 18 September 2018 regarding camp schools
and the proposed commercial lease terms.
(1) Has an
undertaking been provided by Fairbridge WA to not increase the costs to Western
Australian schools that choose a package that includes accommodation and
catering; and, if not, what terms have been determined by the Department of
Education to ensure that catering costs do not increase?
(2) If yes to (1), is the
undertaking for the first year only; and, if yes, why?
(3) Can the
minister advise what terms, if any, have been determined by the Department of
Education to ensure that —
(a) the cost for each camp-based
activity does not increase under the new lease arrangements;
(b) the number of
camp-based activities currently offered at each camp school do not decrease
under the new lease arrangements; and
(c) all
camp-based activities will continue to be offered to schools, irrespective of
the number of students participating, as is currently the case?
Hon SUE
ELLERY replied:
I thank the honourable member for
some notice of this question.
(1) The
undertaking provided by Fairbridge WA is to not increase the costs to Western Australian
schools for accommodation, and any further price increase will only be in line
with the yearly consumer price index increase. The undertaking does not refer
to a package. However, Fairbridge WA, as part of its marketing, could offer a range
of deals to schools. Fairbridge WA has advised that it offers a range of
catering options that schools can choose from, which will be priced
accordingly. There are no specific terms proposed related to catering.
(2) Not applicable.
(3) The terms of
the lease will require Fairbridge WA to report on the various aspects of the
camp operation, including utilisation, costs and activities. The type of
activities and pricing will be determined by the resources required, associated
risk and the level of interest to undertake these activities by camp users.
This will be the role of Fairbridge WA to manage.
Hon Donna
Faragher: You are going to increase the costs. There you go!
The PRESIDENT:
There are no sups in this chamber, member.
Hon Donna
Faragher: Sorry.
Several members
interjected.
The PRESIDENT:
When everyone is quiet, we will continue question time.
