Parliamentary Questions

Question On Notice No. 2684 asked in the Legislative Council on 19 November 2019 by Hon Robin Chapple

Question Directed to the: Minister for Regional Development representing the Minister for Water
Parliament: 40 Session: 1

Question

I refer to the proposed land clearing on a Water Corporation water reserve off McGuigan Road north of Broome, and I ask:
(a) is the Minister aware that the land clearing for a conventional orchard is being partly funded by a Regional Economic Development (RED) Grant of $100,000;
(b) is the use of pesticides and herbicides permitted on the water reserve;
(c) if no to (b), why not;
(d) is the Minister aware that the land clearing application drafted by the Water Corporation for the proponent stated that no pesticides will be used on the water reserve;
(e) does the application for the RED grant by the proponent propose that herbicides and insecticides be used on the water reserve;
(f) if yes to (e), why is it that the land clearing application states no herbicides and insecticides will be used and the RED grant for the same project states that herbicides and insecticides will be used;
(g) if the proposal goes ahead, will chemicals such as herbicides and pesticides be allowed to be used in the water reserve;
(h) if no to (g), how would the use of chemicals be prohibited;
(i) who would monitor the site to make sure chemicals are not used;
(j) how would regrowth and weeds be managed without herbicide sprays; and
(k) how would insects be controlled without the use of insecticides?
