Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 92 asked in the Legislative Council on 20 March 2018 by Hon Jim Chown

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

CAMP SCHOOLS — NON-GOVERNMENT OPERATORS
      92. Hon JIM CHOWN to the Minister for Education and Training:
I refer to the minister's media statement of 13 December 2017, which states that six camp school sites run by the Department of Education will close. I also refer to an article in the Kalgoorlie Miner on 2 March 2018 in which the minister states —
''We have already been contacted by highly reputable not-for-profit organisations, highly regarded organisations who are interested in taking over the running of those camp sites.
      (1) Is it the minister's intention to charge a fee to the alternative operators that will possibly be leasing or running the camp schools?
      (2) Why has the minister not looked at the opportunity of having commercial sponsorship to make up the shortfall in government expenditure in running these camp schools?
Hon SUE ELLERY replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(2) The Department of Education is currently developing an expression of interest process to secure alternative operators for the camp school sites. Commercial arrangements, including fees, safety and duty of care, will be addressed as part of that process.
