Question Without Notice No. 843 asked in the Legislative Council on 19 September 2018 by Hon Nick Goiran

Minister responding: Hon S.F. McGurk
Parliament: 40 Session: 1

Answered on 19 September 2018

843. Hon NICK GOIRAN to the Leader of the House representing the Minister for Child Protection:

I refer to the answer provided by the Minister for Police to my question without notice 667 on 23 August 2018, in which the house was informed that there are 50 victims of the conduct of the 58 offenders charged as a result of Operation Fledermaus and the Pilbara joint response team.

(1) Are these 50 victims the children to which the Minister for Child Protection was referring in her opinion piece published on 6 July 2018, when she said, ''The Department of Communities also advises, based on current information, that there are no registered or charged adult offenders living or having regular contact with children associated with Operation Fledermaus''?

(2) If not, what was the number of children the minister was referring to?

Hon SUE ELLERY replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

(1) No. The minister's opinion piece as quoted above did not refer to any specific number of children.

(2) I refer the member to the previous answer to question without notice 645, whereby records on registered offenders are held by the WA Police Force and not by the Department of Communities. Referrals are provided by WA police only when a registered offender is living with or having regular contact with young people.
