Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 907 asked in the Legislative Council on 15 September 2020 by Hon Peter Collier

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

CORONAVIRUS — QUARANTINE BREACHES

907. Hon PETER COLLIER to the minister representing the Minister for Police:

This question is asked on behalf of Hon Michael Mischin, who is on urgent parliamentary business.

I refer to the 14-day isolation period that forms part of COVID-19 quarantine requirements for all persons entering Western Australia.

(1) How many reports have been received of failures by individuals to comply with that isolation period?

(2) How many have been investigated?

(3) How many have resulted in charges being laid?

(4) How many charges have resulted in convictions by the courts; and, in each case, what penalties have been imposed?

(5) How many charges are still pending before the courts?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank Hon Michael Mischin for some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided to me by the Minister for Police.

(1)–(2) The Western Australia Police Force advises that it is not possible for police to provide relevant information within the time frame as a manual check of each individual report is required to obtain this data. However, the WA Police Force confirms all reports are investigated. If the honourable member places the question on notice, the WA Police Force will identify information that can readily be provided within a reasonable time frame.

(3) As at 15 September 2020, the WA Police Force advises that the following sanctions have been issued in respect of quarantine closing border directions: 33 persons summonsed, 22 persons arrested, 89 infringements issued and three young offender cautions applied.

(4)–(5) These questions should be referred to the Attorney General; however, as has been reported, penalties have included imprisonment.
