Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 918 asked in the Legislative Council on 15 September 2020 by Hon Tim Clifford

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

HOUSING — RENTAL ACCOMMODATION

918. Hon TIM CLIFFORD to the minister representing the Minister for Housing:

I note WA's record low vacancy rates for rentals, the significant deficit in current social and affordable rental housing stock and the Premier's push for thousands of extra fly in, fly out workers to remain in Western Australia during the hard border closures.

How many homes has the McGowan government procured for immediate social housing and affordable rental housing use since March; and —

(a) where are they located; and

(b) what is their average rental price per week?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question.

Since 30 March 2020, the McGowan government has built, purchased or internally transferred 24 properties for use as social housing.

(a) These 24 properties are located in Bayswater, Maylands, Middle Swan, Westminster, Armadale, Carlisle, Kelmscott, Lynwood, Australind, Northam, Carnarvon and Roebourne.

(b) The rental price for public housing tenants who are eligible for subsidised public housing is calculated based on household income. Tenant rental rates are calculated at no more than 25 per cent of their assessable household income or the market rent for the property, whichever is less.
