Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 513 asked in the Legislative Council on 16 May 2019 by Hon Martin Aldridge

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

TAB — PRIVATISATION — HON DARREN WEST'S COMMENTS

513. Hon MARTIN ALDRIDGE to the minister representing the Minister for Racing and Gaming:

I refer to the minister's budget confirmation that the state government will sell the TAB and to comments made by Hon Darren West, MLC, on 13 April 2016 when he said, and I quote —

The sale of TAB will kill off Regional racing.

If Barnett and Holt want to make the sale of our TAB an election issue, I say bring it on!

And on 28 March 2016, when he said, and I quote —

I'm strongly against the sale of the TAB.

So is everyone else.except the Barnett Liberal/National Government.

A change of Government will keep the TAB in public hands and ensure future funding to WA Racing.

(1) Can the minister confirm whether Hon Darren West, a parliamentary secretary in the McGowan government, will now support the very thing he stridently opposed before the last election?

(2) Does the minister agree with Hon Darren West that the sale of the TAB will ''kill off regional racing'', or was he misinformed on the issue?

Hon ALANNAH MacTIERNAN replied:

I thank the member for the question. The following information has been provided to me by the Minister for Racing and Gaming.

(1) Yes.

(2) No.
