NATIVE FOREST —
LOGGING
1176. Hon Dr STEVE THOMAS to the minister representing the
Minister for Forestry:
I refer to the government's
announcement on 8 September 2021 of the ending of most native timber harvesting
in Western Australia.
(1) What volume
of jarrah logs has been extracted to provide access to mining, including for
bauxite and mineral sands, in each of the last five financial years, broken
down into —
(a) sawlogs; and
(b) ecological thinnings?
(2) For each state agreement act
that provides for jarrah to be supplied —
(a) what volume of jarrah is
currently contracted; and
(b) what period of time is each state
agreement act in place for?
Hon
ALANNAH MacTIERNAN replied:
I thank the member for the
question. The Minister for Forestry has provided the following information.
(1) (a) The
Forest Products Commission does not differentiate between the source of sawlogs
delivered in its system. Although this information can be extracted from the
data by operations code, this is a manual process and it will take time to
complete. If the member puts this question on notice, I will endeavour to
provide an answer.
(b) The Forest Products Commission does not undertake
any thinning of areas before mining activity.
(2) (a)–(b)
State agreement acts are administered by the
Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation.
