Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 681 asked in the Legislative Council on 24 June 2020 by Hon Jacqui Boydell

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

SCHOOLS — KARRATHA

681. Hon JACQUI BOYDELL to the Minister for Education and Training:

I indicate that I will ask one question on behalf of Hon Colin Holt, who is absent on urgent parliamentary business.

I refer to schools in Karratha.

(1) Are there any plans to build the next phase of the following schools in the next three years —

(a) Baynton West Primary School; and

(b) Karratha Senior High School?

(2) Does the government intend to attempt to attract any new private schools to invest in Karratha?

(3) Is there any appetite within the government to merge Millars Well Primary School and Peg's Creek Primary School, and build a new campus to accommodate primary school students?

(4) Does the government have any plans to invest in a much-needed second high school for the town; and, if not, why not?

Hon SUE ELLERY replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

(1) (a)–(b) Further development at Karratha Senior High School and Baynton West Primary School is subject to the budget process.

(2) The establishment of a non-government school in Karratha is a decision for the non-government sector. Applications to establish a new non-government school must be made to me, as Minister for Education and Training, to make an advance determination. Any application to establish a new non-government school in Karratha will be given due consideration through the advance determination process.

(3)–(4) The Department of Education actively monitors enrolment growth, population growth, the accommodation capacity of schools and residential development to determine whether schools are coming under pressure and require an enrolment-relieving strategy.
