Question Without Notice No. 117 asked in the Legislative Council on 21 March 2018 by Hon Colin Tincknell

Minister responding: Hon M.H. Roberts
Parliament: 40 Session: 1
Answered on 21 March 2018

POLICE — COMMUNITY SAFETY — STRATEGIES
      117. Hon COLIN TINCKNELL to the minister representing the Minister for Police:
Police statistics show that there has been a sharp increase in offences against the person, in particular those classified as family offences, across both metropolitan and regional areas of Western Australia.
(1) What analysis is being undertaken to identify causality and to inform strategies?
      (2) What strategies is the WA Police Force putting in place to not only reduce crime but also prevent future offences occurring?
      (3) What is the Commissioner of Police's plan to ensure that all areas and police districts are committed to securing community safety and working towards sustainable solutions?
Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. The following information has been provided to me by the Minister for Police.
(1)–(3) Police Commissioner Dawson has recently restructured the police districts to give greater focus to local policing. The government and the WA Police Force's commitment is strong. There will be a transition to an eight-district model across the metropolitan area, with the names of the districts reflecting the major centres in each geographic location. The government is putting into place a review examining a wide range of data relating to crime statistics and the causes of crime. Three sources of pertinent information are the WA New Crime Statistics Portal, the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission's wastewater report and anecdotal evidence from supporting agencies working with family and domestic violence victims.
Reducing crime needs an across-government approach. That is why the state government has created, amongst a number of strategies, the meth action plan, which had recent success with a major meth haul, disrupting a crime syndicate. The family and domestic violence unit, the meth border force and Target 120 are three different strategies the government is using to combat family violence.
