Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 846 asked in the Legislative Council on 15 August 2019 by Hon Jacqui Boydell

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

NINGA MIA — GOLDFIELDS

846. Hon JACQUI BOYDELL to the minister representing the Minister for Lands:

I refer to the Ninga Mia community in the goldfields.

(1) Can the minister confirm that the land on which Ninga Mia sits is an Aboriginal Lands Trust reserve?

(2) If no to (1), can the minister please provide the current status of the land tenure?

(3) Can the minister outline the tenancy agreement and agencies responsible for managing both the land tenure and residential tenancies?

(4) Given the high level of cultural significance of this land, can the minister confirm whether any heritage surveys have been undertaken; and, if yes, can the minister please table the department responsible and dates and times undertaken?

(5) If no to (4), are there plans to ensure that the cultural significance is recognised and recorded?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided by the Minister for Lands.

(1) Ninga Mia is a town-based reserve located on crown reserve 38078, with a management order to the Aboriginal Lands Trust.

(2) Not applicable.

(3) The Aboriginal Lands Trust is responsible for the land, with Community Housing Ltd, on behalf of the Department of Communities, responsible for tenancy management.

(4)–(5) Three heritage surveys have been undertaken over the area that includes Ninga Mia: a report on fieldwork in the eastern goldfields, Department of Aboriginal Affairs sites, from 21 to 27 August 1989; a continuation of fieldwork in the Coolgardie–Kalgoorlie region, Department of Aboriginal Affairs sites, from 26 November to 1 December 1990; and Aboriginal consultation regarding the rehabilitation of Mt Gleddon, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd, in 2002.
