JANGARDUP MINE —
ACID SULPHATE CONTAMINATION
897. Hon DIANE EVERS to the Minister for Environment:
I refer to the former Jangardup
mineral sands mine.
(1) How far
offsite from the former Jangardup mineral sands mine has the acid sulphate
groundwater plume caused by former mining operations migrated?
(2) Is the
minister aware of the proposed mining lease application M70/1385 located in an
area of very high acid sulphate soil occurrence adjacent to Lake Jasper?
Hon
STEPHEN DAWSON replied:
I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1) I am advised
by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation that the core of the
acid sulphate groundwater plume remains
predominantly within or adjacent to the former Jangardup mineral sands mine
site, with the outer edge of the plume extending offsite.
(2) I am aware of mining lease
application M70/1385.
