ELDER ABUSE
1147. Hon NICK GOIRAN to the Leader of the House representing
the Minister for Seniors and Ageing:
I refer to the minister's
answer to question without notice 794, which was asked in the other place by
the member for Wanneroo on 17 October 2018, in which he said that some of the
recommendations made at the elder abuse summit this year were very good, while
others will be very hard to implement.
(1) Which recommendations does the
minister think are very good?
(2) Which recommendations does the
minister think will be very hard to implement?
Hon SUE ELLERY replied:
I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1) All seven of
the following recommendations were useful and will inform the development of
our comprehensive response to elder abuse. They are: define the language and
scope of the problem; education and awareness; map services and determine what
is available; challenging ageism and negative attitudes and stereotypes towards
older people and ageing; building the capacity of the system to respond and
resources available; maximise protective factors; and build on the work of
other sectors.
(2) The
recommendations that will need generational change to be realised include
recommendation 4, challenging ageism and negative attitudes and stereotypes
towards older people and ageing; and recommendation 5, building the capacity of
the elder abuse response system.
