Parliamentary Questions

Question On Notice No. 3242 asked in the Legislative Council on 8 October 2020 by Hon Nick Goiran

Question Directed to the: Leader of the House representing the Minister for Child Protection; Women's Interests; Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence; Community Services
Parliament: 40 Session: 1

Question

I refer to action items 2 and 19 of the 'First Action Plan 2020 – 2022' that is part of the Family and Domestic Violence Strategy, and I ask:
(a) how is the Department tracking and responding to demand variances that relate to victims and perpetrators of family and domestic violence, as a consequence of COVID-19; and
(b) when is the ‘Code of Practice for the response and investigation of family violence reports, with a specific focus of reports involving Aboriginal victims’ expected to be completed?

Answered on 5 November 2020

a)  The Department of Communities (Communities) is collecting data to measure and track the social impact of COVID-19. This includes a range of indicators to track changes in demand, relating to family and domestic violence.

This information informs Communities of any additional COVID-19 related responses to family and domestic violence. The WA Government’s COVID-19 recovery response via Communities has so far included:

  • Employment of mobile outreach workers state-wide to provide support for women and children experiencing family and domestic violence.
  • Increased capacity for Family Violence Response Teams that support victims following a police call-out.
  • Development of a program to support women who are residing at refuges to gain employment skills, access career training or retraining and attend a range of workshops and short courses to support employment pathways.

b)  This part of the question should be referred to the Minister for Police as item 19 under the 'First Action Plan 2020 – 2022' is being led by the WA Police Force.
