Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 508 asked in the Legislative Council on 26 June 2018 by Hon Alison Xamon

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

YOUTH DIVERSIONARY COURT
      508. Hon ALISON XAMON to the Leader of the House representing the Attorney General:
I refer to the youth Koori Court pilot program in New South Wales, which provides intensive case management for young people and which has been found to reduce detention times and to help address underlying causes of offending.
      (1) Will the McGowan government consider establishing a diversionary court for Aboriginal young people in Western Australia?
(2) If no to (1), why not?
(3) If yes to (1), when?
Hon SUE ELLERY replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(3) The McGowan government is examining a range of measures that may reduce offending by young people, particularly by Aboriginal young people. Any measures taken by the government will be research based and carefully planned.
