Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 944 asked in the Legislative Council on 16 September 2020 by Hon Colin De Grussa

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

KALGOORLIE QUARANTINE AND DECONTAMINATION FACILITY

944. Hon COLIN de GRUSSA to the Minister for Agriculture and Food:

I refer to the Kalgoorlie quarantine and decontamination facility.

(1) What positions at the facility are directly involved in the handling of livestock and what accreditation and experience in the handling, inspection, safety and welfare of animals is held by each of the personnel employed in those positions?

(2) With respect to its current operations, is the facility fully compliant with all statutory requirements, including the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984, the Animal Welfare Act 2002 and the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007?

Hon ALANNAH MacTIERNAN replied:

I thank the member for the question.

As the member is aware, there has been a recent change in the management at the facility following the tragic passing of a longstanding officer. The funeral was held today and many of the staff and line management were consequently not available. I can say that I have been advised that the following is the case.

(1) There is one position at the facility, the senior livestock inspector, and he is an authorised officer under the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007 and has undertaken training for handling stock animals.

(2) Yes, I am advised that the design and operation of the facility complies with statutory requirements.
