Question Without Notice No. 16 asked in the Legislative Council on 13 March 2018 by Hon Robin Scott

Parliament: 40 Session: 1
Answered on 13 March 2018

STATE BUDGET — MINERAL RESOURCES — IRON ORE MINES
      16. Hon ROBIN SCOTT to the minister representing the Treasurer:
      (1) Does the Treasurer recall being quoted by Shane Wright in the online The West Australian at 2.04 pm on 23 February 2018 as saying —
''We remain committed to returning the budget to surplus which is the only sustainable way to fix the state's finances''?
      (2) How can the Treasurer reconcile this and similar statements with his failure to support Mineral Resources' plan to open two iron ore mines in the Helena and Aurora Ranges in the Yilgarn, which would contribute $1 billion to the economy of Western Australia over 10 years?
      (3) Why does the Treasurer allow green rhetoric to sabotage his efforts to overcome Western Australia's debt problem?
Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.
(l) Yes.
      (2) The decision was based on sound advice that independently considered the forecast economic returns of the mines against the environmental value of the site.
(3) The Treasurer does not.
