Question Without Notice No. 765 asked in the Legislative Council on 31 August 2022 by Hon Colin De Grussa

Parliament: 41 Session: 1

SCHOOLS — PARENTAL VIOLENCE

765. Hon COLIN de GRUSSA to the Minister for Education and Training:

I refer to a recent article in The West Australian referring to the violence inflicted on teachers and principals by parents.

(1) How many incidents have resulted in a prohibition order on a parent or parents within the school system in the past 12 months?

(2) How many prohibition orders have been issued for the following years —

(a) 2021; and

(b) 2022, year to date?

(3) How many complaints has the parent liaison office received since it was established?

Hon SUE ELLERY replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

(1)–(2) Prohibition orders are a matter for individual schools. The Department of Education does not hold this information centrally.

(3) The parent liaison office provides support to complex and protracted complaint processes. There are some instances when a single complaint may have multiple and ongoing complaints, so the figure is variable. For the period 13 April 2021 to 31 August 2022, the parent liaison office has provided support for 95 complaint processes.
