Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 469 asked in the Legislative Council on 14 May 2019 by Hon Simon O’Brien

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

CONTAINER DEPOSIT SCHEME — COORDINATOR

469. Hon SIMON O'BRIEN to the Minister for Environment:

I refer to the minister's media statement today in which he announced the appointment of a coordinator to run the container deposit scheme, the coordinator being WA Return Recycle Renew Ltd.

Who is behind this company and is it a government entity; and, was it set up purely for the purpose outlined or is it a pre-existing organisation?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank the honourable member for the question.

I am very pleased that Hon Simon O'Brien has paid attention to my media statements and the good work that is happening in the environment space. WA Return Recycle Renew is a not-for-profit company. It has been established especially for the container deposit scheme that will operate in Western Australia. The two main organisations involved are Coca–Cola Amatil and Lion Nathan Ltd. Certainly, now that that announcement has been made—after an independent process—we are hopeful that the scheme will be in operation in early 2020.
