Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 1277 asked in the Legislative Council on 29 November 2018 by Hon Martin Aldridge

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

MINES AND PETROLEUM — ONSHORE GAS INDUSTRY

1277. Hon MARTIN ALDRIDGE to the minister representing the Minister for Mines and Petroleum:

I refer to Legislative Council question on notice 1591, asked by me and answered on 20 September 2018, about exploration permits and production and extractives licences issued by the Labor state government.

(1) Since the election of the Labor state government, please identify the permits and licences issued for onshore gas, including —

(a) licence or permit number;

(b) approximate location of licence or permit;

(c) date of approval;

(d) size of approved licence or permit area; and

(e) name of the approved applicant.

(2) How will these licences or permits be impacted by the state government decision of 27 November 2018?

Hon ALANNAH MacTIERNAN replied:

I thank the member for the question. The Minister for Mines and Petroleum has provided the following answer.

(1) (a)–(e) Two exploration permits have been granted for onshore gas since March 2017. Exploration permit 496, which was granted on 9 October 2017 to Bunbury Energy Pty Ltd, covers approximately 668 square kilometres and is located 170 kilometres south of Perth, immediately south of Bunbury. Exploration permit 498, which was granted on 6 February 2018 to Southern Sky Energy Pty Ltd, covers approximately 1 492 square kilometres and is located 150 kilometres north of Perth and 80 kilometres east of Dongara.

One production licence has been granted since March 2017 for onshore gas. Production licence L22 was granted on 20 September 2018 to Lattice Energy Resources (Perth Basin) Pty Ltd and AWE (Beharra Springs) Pty Ltd. It covers approximately 149 square kilometres and is located 200 kilometres north of Perth and 29 kilometres south east of Dongara.

(2) Exploration permit 496 will continue to be subject to the fracking prohibition in the south west region. Production licence L22 and exploration permit 498 will have the moratorium lifted over their areas, but will be subject to the new requirements as announced by the government.
