POLICE — FEDERAL
ELECTION
566. Hon MARTIN ALDRIDGE to the minister representing the
Minister for Police:
I refer to the recent federal
election campaign and concerns raised by Commissioner Dawson in relation to the
adverse politicisation of the WA Police Force arising from signage distributed
by the Labor candidate for Pearce.
(1) What laws,
regulations or policies, if any, are in place to prevent this adverse
politicisation of the WA Police Force?
(2) On what
date and time did the Commissioner of Police convey his request to Ms Travers
to remove the signage in question?
(3) Did Ms
Travers comply in full with the commissioner's request to remove the
signage in question; and, if so, when was the request fulfilled?
(4) Are the
minister or commissioner considering further measures to ensure this type of
conflict does not arise in future election campaigns?
Hon
STEPHEN DAWSON replied:
I thank the honourable member for
some notice of this question.
(1)–(4) As
was reported in the media on 18 May 2019, the Commissioner of Police contacted
the candidate and requested that the signs be taken down. It is my
understanding that all reasonable steps were taken to fulfil the request and no
further action was required.
