Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 1402 asked in the Legislative Council on 22 November 2019 by Hon Colin Holt

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

MANGROVE COVE — BUNBURY

1402. Hon COLIN HOLT to the Minister for Environment:

I refer to the development at Koombana Drive, Bunbury, and the area around the new lookout tower.

(1) Does the government have a master plan for this area; and, if so, can the minister please table the plan?

(2) When will the boardwalk and the nature-based playground be completed, and can the minister please identify the total cost for each?

(3) What other public facilities will be built, when and at what cost?

(4) How will all these future works be funded?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

(1)–(4) The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions is working with the Bunbury Development Committee and the City of Bunbury's Co-Design Access Panel to prepare a design for improved accessibility within the remaining Mangrove Cove area. There is no master plan for this area.

Designs for stage 2 works will be developed for improved universal path access and an accessible playground with a focus on nature play. A toilet block will also be built at the site, and there will be additional landscaping. Costings will be determined once the designs are finalised. There is approximately $2 million remaining to deliver stage 2 works. These works are expected to commence in the second half of 2020.

The Bunbury Development Committee is leading investigations into options for a future vision and uses for the currently undeveloped portion of the Mangrove Cove site, which includes community consultation. The sum of $500 000 has been allocated to the South West Development Commission for these investigations.
