Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 72 asked in the Legislative Council on 18 May 2017 by Hon Michael Mischin

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY CODE OF CONDUCT
      72. Hon MICHAEL MISCHIN to the Leader of the House representing the Premier:
At a Housing Industry Association forum held on 23 February 2017 and attended by representatives of the building industry, Hon Kate Doust, Hon Fran Logan and Hon Rita Saffioti claimed that a McGowan Labor government would protect the interests of subcontractors in the industry. Hon Kate Doust, who took credit for having championed the interests of subcontractors against unethical behaviour, was asked whether a McGowan government supported the Barnett government's WA Building and Construction Industry Code of Conduct published in December 2016, but she claimed, to general surprise, that she had not yet read it. Given its purported commitment to protecting the interests of building industry subcontractors —
      (1) Has the McGowan Labor government now gotten around to reading the code; and, if not, why not?
      (2) Does the McGowan Labor government support the code; and, if not, why not?
      (3) Has the McGowan Labor government, though any of its ministers or representatives, received representations from unions regarding the code; and, what were those and from whom?
      (4) If the government does not support elements of the code, are those elements ones to which unions take exception?
      (5) If the government does not support elements of the code, are those elements ones the government considers to be contrary to union interests?
Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:
On behalf of the Leader of the House, I thank the member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(5) I advise the honourable member that the question should be directed to the Minister for Commerce.
Hon Michael Mischin: How? I am asking the Premier about his government's attitude.
Hon STEPHEN DAWSON: That's the answer I have.
