RECREATIONAL FISHING
LICENCES
679. Hon PETER COLLIER to
the minister representing the Minister for Fisheries:
I ask this question on behalf of Hon
Jim Chown, who is on urgent parliamentary business.
(1) How many recreational fishing licences were issued
in Western Australia in the years 2019, 2018 and 2017?
(2) What is the
monetary value of revenue collected from the issuing of recreational fishing
licences in Western Australia for the years 2019, 2018 and 2017?
(3) Why is WA the only state that does not offer a short-term
recreational fishing licence option—for example, a three-day,
weekly or monthly option—as opposed to the annual licence that is
currently the only choice available to residents and tourists alike?
Hon ALANNAH MacTIERNAN
replied:
I thank the member for the
question. The following information has been provided by the Minister for
Fisheries.
(1) In 2019,
there were 154 420 recreational fishing licences issued; in 2018, there were
163 759 issued; and in 2017, there were 169 458 issued.
(2) In 2019,
recreational fishing licence revenue was $8 215 519; in 2018, it was $8 245 315;
and in 2017, it was $7 571 891.
(3) An annual
period for licensed recreational fishing activities provides the best basis for
estimating total recreational catch and effort. This is an important component
of the licensing framework.
