Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 445 asked in the Legislative Council on 22 August 2017 by Hon Dr Steve Thomas

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

WATER FOR FOOD PROGRAM — MYALUP–WELLINGTON AND SOUTHERN FORESTS
      445. Hon Dr STEVE THOMAS to the minister representing the Minister for Water:
I refer to the Minister for Regional Development's comments in this house on Thursday, 17 August about the application for federal funding from the National Water Infrastructure Development Fund for the Myalup–Wellington project and the southern forests irrigation scheme, when the minister advised that neither project was successful in the first round.
      (1) Has the federal government advised the state government why the projects were not successful in the first round?
      (2) Can the minister confirm that both projects were assessed by an independent panel and that the panel recommended against funding for both?
      (3) What advice has the government received from the commonwealth about the adequacy of the initial application?
      (4) Was the government advised that, according to the independent panel, the application submitted by the Western Australian state government failed to fully address the fund criteria?
      (5) If yes to (4), will the government reapply for federal funding for these projects by submitting an adequate and comprehensive application that fully addresses the fund criteria?
Hon ALANNAH MacTIERNAN replied:
The blue‑on‑green wars continue! I thank the member for notice of the question. The Minister for Water has provided the following answer.
(1) Yes.
      (2) Questions about the commonwealth government's assessment process should be directed to the commonwealth.
      (3) The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation was advised that the initial application submitted during the period of the previous Liberal–National government did not fully address the fund criteria.
      (4) Yes.
      (5) The Minister for Regional Development and I will be working to ensure that the commonwealth government is provided with all the required information to demonstrate that these projects meet the funding criteria.
