Question On Notice No. 1720 asked in the Legislative Council on 30 October 2018 by Hon Alison Xamon
Question Directed to the: Minister for Environment representing the Minister for Corrective Services
Parliament: 40 Session: 1
Question
I refer to the Inspector of Custodial Services’ report of
the 2017 Inspection of Melaleuca Remand and Reintegration Facility, and to
concerns raised by the Inspector regarding the lack of privacy afforded to
women in the Crisis Care Unit (CCU), and I ask:
(a) have
steps now been taken to ensure the privacy of women in the CCU, particularly
women using the toilet or shower;
(b) if
yes (to (a), please outline what action has been taken; and
(c) if
no to (a), why not?
Answered on 27 November 2018
- CCTV coverage in the CCU remains as it was at the time of the inspection.
- N/A.
- The CCU primarily houses women who require additional supervision, often because they pose a risk to themselves. The Department of Justice is continuing to explore the opportunity to use a privacy dot on CCTV cameras in the CCU. Changes to CCTV arrangements will be considered where the Department is satisfied that the safety and wellbeing of prisoners housed in the CCU will not be compromised.
