Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 844 asked in the Legislative Council on 21 September 2022 by Hon Tjorn Sibma

Parliament: 41 Session: 1

CLIMATE CHANGE — EMISSIONS REDUCTION TARGET

844. Hon TJORN SIBMA to the minister representing the Minister for Environment:

I refer to the state government's commitment to reduce its carbon emissions by 80 per cent below 2020 levels by 2030. What were the state government's carbon emission levels for each of the following years —

(a) 2017;

(b) 2018;

(c) 2019;

(d) 2020; and

(e) 2021?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank the honourable member for notice of the question. The following answer has been provided to me by the Minister for Environment; Climate Action.

(a)–(c) Some government trading enterprises, including Synergy and the Water Corporation, report greenhouse gas emissions under the commonwealth National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007. As most government agencies are not subject to these requirements, an aggregate of emissions from state government operations for 2017–2019 is not available.

(d)–(e) The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation has estimated government emissions for 2020–21 as 7.34 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent to establish a baseline for the government target.
