Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 103 asked in the Legislative Council on 19 February 2020 by Hon Charles Smith

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

WATER — PFAS — BULLSBROOK

103. Hon CHARLES SMITH to the minister representing the Minister for Water:

I refer to the minister's recent media statements supporting communities in the Agricultural Region and, in particular, the South West Region with news of a new water pipeline connecting Denmark with the lower great southern towns water supply scheme. When will the government stop ignoring the residents of Bullsbrook in the East Metropolitan Region, who have literally been poisoned by RAAF Base Pearce, and connect them with fresh clean water?

Hon DARREN WEST replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. On behalf of the Minister for Regional Development representing the Minister for Water, I provide the following answer.

The WA government is not ignoring the residents of Bullsbrook. The federal government, as the polluter, is responsible for the resolution of PFAS issues in Bullsbrook. In June 2019, the Water Corporation provided the Department of Defence with options and indicative costs for connection to the integrated water supply scheme. The federal government has advised that it does not intend to connect the community of west Bullsbrook to scheme water. We continue to press the federal government on this issue and seek a fair resolution to this matter.
