Question Without Notice No. 181 asked in the Legislative Council on 11 March 2020 by Hon Tim Clifford

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

Answered on

CLIMATE CHANGE POLICY — PRIORITY

181. Hon TIM CLIFFORD to the Leader of the House representing the Premier:

I refer to today's date, three years exactly since WA Labor was voted into government.

Given that the 2017 WA Labor election platform explicitly states ''WA Labor supports the need for Western Australia to develop strong mitigation and adaptation plans to deal with the consequences of climate change'', will the Premier please explain why it has taken more than three years for this government to create and implement a comprehensive climate policy despite climate change action being a priority of this government?

Hon SUE ELLERY replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

Development of the state climate policy has involved considerable research, analysis and public consultation. The ''Climate Change in Western Australia'' issues paper was released late last year for public consultation and generated significant community and stakeholder interest. Almost 4 000 submissions were received and these submissions are being considered in detail. The state climate policy will be released later this year.
