Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 1195 asked in the Legislative Council on 22 November 2018 by Hon Donna Faragher

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

SCHOOLS — EMBER SCREENS

1195. Hon DONNA FARAGHER to the Minister for Education and Training:

I refer to the minister's press statement dated 10 May 2018 titled, ''Maintenance program to upgrade older WA schools'', and specifically the statement —

$6.75 million will be invested to equip 222 schools in recently zoned bushfire risk areas with extra preventative measures.

Those measures include things such as ember screens.

(1) Has this funding been fully allocated; and, if not, can the minister advise the amount allocated in 2018–19 and across the forward estimates?

(2) Will the minister provide a list of the 222 schools identified as needing extra preventive measures?

(3) Of those schools referred to in (2), will the minister advise which schools have already had ember screens and/or other preventive measures installed and the installation time frame for the remaining schools?

Hon SUE ELLERY replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

(1) Yes.

(2) The number of sites identified as needing ember screens has increased to 223—that is an additional one. The list of sites is subject to change as detailed on-site inspection may reveal that no or fewer ember screens are required at a site. The original list was based on a desktop analysis. I table the attached list.

[See paper 2223.]

(3) Of the 223 school sites identified for the installation of ember screens as part of the 2018–19 program, 29 sites have had the ember screens installed and 33 sites are currently in progress. It is anticipated that the 2018–19 ember screen program will be completed by the end of January 2019.
