Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 859 asked in the Legislative Council on 8 September 2020 by Hon Robin Scott

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

CHINESE MEDIA — COMMENTS

859. Hon ROBIN SCOTT to the Leader of the House representing the Premier:

A week ago, the Chinese state-owned newspaper the Global Times published five hate pieces, one of which made reference to Australians being the ''poor white trash of Asia''.

(1) Does the government support the comments made by the state-owned Global Times?

(2) If not, why will the Premier not show the same strength against the Chinese government that he does against the Chinese coronavirus?

The PRESIDENT: I think the first part of that question might have been seeking an opinion, Leader of the House.

Hon SUE ELLERY replied:

It does, Madam President, but I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question, and I am happy to provide the answer.

(1)–(2) Foreign affairs is the responsibility of the federal government.
