Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 569 asked in the Legislative Council on 11 June 2020 by Hon Peter Collier

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

PORTS — LUMSDEN POINT — PORT HEDLAND

569. Hon PETER COLLIER to the Minister for Ports:

Notice of this question was given on Tuesday, 19 May 2020. I refer to question without notice 380, asked on Friday, 17 April 2020, regarding the development of Lumsden Point.

(1) Will the minister list the financial impact criteria that the proposals were assessed against; and, if not, why not?

(2) How many jobs are expected to be created as a result of the project?

(3) What is the expected completion date of the Lumsden Point development?

(4) Is there likely to be any capacity issues at Port Hedland port, given the delay of this project; and, if not, why not?

Hon Alannah MacTiernan: That is the Leader of the Opposition's own question, is it?

Hon PETER COLLIER: Yes, it is C476.

Hon ALANNAH MacTIERNAN replied:

I thank the member for the question.

(1) The financial impact criteria will deliver an economic return to the state and a financial return to the Pilbara Ports Authority while ensuring all other non-financial objectives are met.

(2) When fully developed and operational, Lumsden Point is forecast to create approximately 200 full-time jobs.

(3) Preliminary rehabilitation, dredging and reclamation is complete. Consideration is being given as to how the site could be developed in partnership with the private sector and a revised business case is being prepared for the delivery of common user infrastructure, access corridor, road and causeway.

(4) Current trade forecasts indicate sufficient capacity at existing Port Hedland general cargo berths in the near term.
