Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 958 asked in the Legislative Council on 17 September 2020 by Hon Charles Smith

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

MIDLAND WORKSHOPS — DEVELOPMENTWA

958. Hon CHARLES SMITH to the minister representing the Minister for Lands:

I refer to DevelopmentWA attempting to offload the Midland railway workshops to the City of Swan.

(1) What was the average annual expenditure on the ongoing conservation, renewal and maintenance costs of the Midland railway workshops over the last three years?

(2) Why is the government attempting to cost-shift the maintenance and responsibility of the workshops to the City of Swan?

(3) Has the government held any meetings with Town Team Movement, a self-described not-for-profit organisation, in relation to developing the workshops?

(4) If yes to (3), will the minister please table the minutes of this meeting?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

(1) The average annual cost for the entire Midland railway workshops precinct over the last three years was $650 000. The heritage buildings being discussed with the City of Swan cover only a small proportion of this area.

(2) DevelopmentWA's objective is to deliver the best land use and land management outcomes from the site as part of the normalisation process for former Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority landholdings.

(3) DevelopmentWA representatives were invited to an informal introductory meeting with Town Teams in 2019, and subsequently introduced it to the City of Swan. No formal meetings have been held.

(4) Not applicable.
