Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 499 asked in the Legislative Council on 5 September 2017 by Hon Peter Collier

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

NATIONAL DISABILITY INSURANCE SCHEME — WESTERN AUSTRALIAN MODEL
      499. Hon PETER COLLIER to the Minister for Disability Services:
Given that the government is now six months old and uncertainty exists within the disability sector, can the minister please give an indication of when he will make a decision on the model that Western Australia will follow with the National Disability Insurance Scheme?
Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:
I thank the honourable member for the question and his interest in the National Disability Insurance Scheme. As I have said in this house previously, and I say regularly, this government is in discussions with the federal government to work out the best model of an NDIS going forward. My office, the Department of the Premier and Cabinet and I keep in close contact with the federal government. We are hopeful of coming to a resolution very, very soon. I understand there is a great deal of uncertainty in the community and I want to fix that issue. However, I want to make sure that the scheme we end up with in Western Australia is the best scheme for people with disability in this state. There were issues with the scheme and the bilateral agreement that was signed off by the last government before we went to the election. I want to make sure that the issues that were raised by the community, people with disability, families and carers are addressed as part of this process and these discussions with the federal government.
