Question Without Notice No. 434 asked in the Legislative Council on 14 May 2020 by Hon Peter Collier

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

CORRUPTION AND CRIME COMMISSIONER — REAPPOINTMENT

434. Hon PETER COLLIER to the Leader of the House representing the Premier:

My question without notice is asked on behalf of Hon Michael Mischin, who is on urgent parliamentary business.

I refer to the story in The West Australian of 27 April 2020 titled ''Libs' CCC move 'almost corrupt''' in which the Premier ''revealed'' the identities of the two other candidates recommended to the Joint Standing Committee on the Corruption and Crime Commission for appointment as commissioner.

(1) Why did the Premier reveal the names of the two other candidates?

(2) What was the source of his information as to their identities; and, if by correspondence, will the Premier table that correspondence, or give a reason why it should be kept confidential?

(3) Did he learn their identities before being informed of them by the JSCCCC; and, if so, from whom and when?

(4) Did he obtain the consent of the candidates before revealing their names; and, if so, how and when; and, if not, why not?

(5) Did he obtain the consent of the JSCCCC to reveal the names of the candidates; and, if not, why not?

(6) When he wrote to the Leader of the Opposition on 7 April 2020 threatening her with political embarrassment if she did not press the JSCCCC to recommend the reappointment of Mr John McKechnie, why did he not reveal to her the names of the two other candidates?

The PRESIDENT: That is a very long question, member.

Hon SUE ELLERY replied:

I have an answer, but I think there is one element that I need to double-check. I am going to double-check that now, and if I can give the member the answer by the end of question time, I will.
