KIMBERLEY SUICIDES —
CORONER'S REPORT — GOVERNMENT RESPONSE
1182. Hon NICK GOIRAN to the Leader of the House representing
the Minister for Child Protection:
I refer to the State Coroner's
''Inquest into the deaths of: Thirteen Children and Young Persons in the
Kimberley Region, Western Australia'', and note that recommendation 20
was accepted by the government. It states —
That Department of Communities'
child protection workers and school teaching staff (in the public and private
sectors) who have regular contact with Aboriginal children receive appropriate
training in suicide intervention and prevention, and that such training be
provided at appropriately regular intervals.
(1) Has the Department of
Communities implemented this recommendation?
(2) If yes to (1), how many staff
have received this training to date?
(3) What has been determined to be
the appropriately regular intervals for such training?
(4) Has the
Minister for Child Protection had any conversations with the Minister for
Education and Training, other than in order to prepare an answer to this question,
to ensure that this recommendation is being implemented across government?
Hon SUE
ELLERY replied:
I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
Because of the limited time frame, I
am unable to provide an answer today, but will endeavour to have a response for
the member by 5 November 2020.
