Parliamentary Questions

Question On Notice No. 2667 asked in the Legislative Council on 31 October 2019 by Hon Tim Clifford

Question Directed to the: Minister for Environment
Parliament: 40 Session: 1

Question

I refer to the North West Gas Development (Woodside) Agreement Amendment Bill 2019, and I ask:
(a) will the Minister please table the projected emissions from the North West Shelf facility for every year of its planned extension;
(b) if the Minister is unable to table projected emissions from the North West Shelf facility for every year of its planned extension, then please table what emissions data the Minister has access to;
(c) for the emissions data the Minister is unable to table, please explain why the Minister does not have access to this data and why data transparency is not a requirement of extending the North West Gas Development Agreement;
(d) what is the projected volume or supply of domestic gas expected to flow from the Burrup Hub expansion; and
(e) what are the associated annual greenhouse gas emissions from combustion of this gas in Western Australia?

Answered on 3 December 2019

(a)-(c) and (e) I am advised that the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) is currently assessing, an extension of operations for the North West Shelf facility until 2070 through a Public Environmental Review. As part of this assessment the proponent is required to characterise proposed emissions and develop an air emissions inventory for the facility, which will be published as part of the Environmental Review Document. The Environmental Review Document will be available shortly for public review.

(d) The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation advises that an estimated 1800 petajoules of domestic gas is expected to be supplied over the project life.
