Question Without Notice No. 887 asked in the Legislative Council on 29 November 2017 by Hon Tim Clifford

Minister responding: Hon D.J. Kelly
Parliament: 40 Session: 1
Answered on 29 November 2017

      887. Hon TIM CLIFFORD to the minister representing the Minister for Innovation and ICT:
I refer to the minister's announcement of the New Industries Fund yesterday.
      (1) Given that the government's pre-election commitment was to create a fund to support the start-up and gaming sector, how can the minister say that this election commitment has been delivered when the new industries fund makes zero mention of the games industry?
      (2) Were members of the WA gaming industry consulted prior to the minister making the decision to remove any specific mention of the games industry from the new industries fund?
      (3) Will the minister continue to encourage talented Western Australian game developers to move interstate and contribute to the economies of Victoria and South Australia rather than commit to creating jobs in this emerging industry here in WA?
I thank the member for the question. The answer is based on information provided by the Minister for Innovation and ICT.
      (1) The new industries fund is for all Western Australian innovators, emerging businesses and small to medium-sized enterprises, including those from the gaming sector, and all are encouraged to apply for funding through the fund initiatives.
      (2) The gaming sector was consulted ahead of the new industries fund announcement and is eligible for funding and support from the new industries fund.
      (3) The premise of the question is incorrect. Further, the minister is happy to work with any member interested in growing the gaming industry in Western Australia.
