Question Without Notice No. 428 asked in the Legislative Council on 8 May 2019 by Hon Charles Smith

Minister responding: Hon S.M. Ellery
Parliament: 40 Session: 1

Answered on 8 May 2019

428. Hon CHARLES SMITH to the Minister for Education and Training:

I refer to widespread concerns about entry and education standards in Western Australian universities, as highlighted by the ABC's Four Corners program. Will the government now call for a review of entry requirements into Western Australia's universities, which, according to many academics, have been forced to lower standards and pass failing international students in order to maintain numbers?

Hon SUE ELLERY replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

No. The matter of entry and standards in Western Australian universities is the responsibility of the Australian government. The federal Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency has responsibility for monitoring and compliance.
