Question Without Notice No. 457 asked in the Legislative Council on 23 August 2017 by Hon Robin Chapple
Parliament: 40 Session: 1
BOODARIE LANDING AND KARIYARRA ISLAND — ACCESS
457. Hon ROBIN CHAPPLE to the minister representing the Minister for Transport:
I refer to Boodarie landing and Kariyarra Island, which are under the tenure of the Pilbara Ports Authority, and recent reports that all access to the site has been blocked by Roy Hill, despite the site being an important sacred place for the Kariyarra traditional owners.
(1) Has access to Boodarie landing and Kariyarra Island been restricted; and, if yes, why?
(2) What is the intention behind restricting access to this sacred place?
(3) Does the restriction extend to the traditional owners?
(4) Are there any development plans for the Boodarie landing or Kariyarra Island sites at this stage?
Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided by the Minister for Transport.
(1) No. The Pilbara Ports Authority has not restricted access to Boodarie landing and Kariyarra Island.
(2)–(3) Not applicable.
(4) No.
