Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 982 asked in the Legislative Council on 5 September 2019 by Hon Colin Holt

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

COLLIE MOTORPLEX — UPGRADES

982. Hon COLIN HOLT to the Leader of the House representing the Minister for Sport and Recreation:

I refer to the Collie Motorplex.

(1) Will the minister please provide a detailed breakdown of how the $100 000 promised to market the Collie Motorplex has been expended, especially the marketing of the 2019 Australian Historic Road Racing Championship motorcycle event?

(2) Given that the stage 1 upgrades were funded by the previous state government and the stage 2 upgrades have mostly been funded by Bendigo Bank and the federal government, will the minister please list all funding for upgrades provided by the current state government?

(3) Will the minister please list all state government funding programs that the Collie Motorplex may be eligible to apply for?

(4) Will the minister please outline the efforts he has made to facilitate funding for further upgrades of the Collie Motorplex?

(5) Will the minister please provide details of upgrades to the Collie Motorplex, including who provided the funding for the upcoming 2019 Australian Historic Road Racing Championship motorcycle event?

Hon SUE ELLERY replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

(1) As at 5 September 2019, the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries did not have any evidence of expenditure by Motoring South West.

(2) As the honourable member has been previously advised, in 2017, the state government allocated $314 000 in royalties for regions funding to the Collie Motorplex for track improvements to enable the track to be sanctioned by national motorsport bodies.

(3) The state funding programs are the community sporting and recreation facilities fund, royalties for regions and the Collie Futures Fund. To date, no applications for funding through these avenues have been forthcoming.

(4) The Minister for Sport and Recreation has led the development of the WA motorsport strategy, which provides a framework for the continued development of black track motorsport in the state. The minister has also encouraged Motoring South West, the operator of the Collie raceway, to undertake master planning for the Collie raceway.

(5) The funding provided by the state government to upgrade the Collie Motorplex was not specific to the hosting of the Historic Road Racing Championship motorcycle event. The Historic Competition Motorcycle Club of WA has received $14 200 funding for event overlay to host the 2019 Australian historic motorcycle road racing championships at the Collie Motorplex.
