Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 256 asked in the Legislative Council on 15 June 2021 by Hon Peter Collier

Parliament: 41 Session: 1

POLICE — SWORN OFFICERS

256. Hon PETER COLLIER to the minister representing the Minister for Police:

I refer to the commitment of the Labor government of 950 additional police officers outlined in the 2020–21 budget.

(1) How many sworn officers were employed by the WA police department on 8 October 2020—the date that the budget was released?

(2) How many additional sworn officers have been employed by the Western Australia Police Force since the date of this announcement?

(3) How many officers have left the police force since 8 October 2020?

(4) How many sworn officers were employed on 14 June 2021?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. The following information has been provided to me by the Minister for Police.

The detailed information requested is unable to be provided in the required time and the honourable member is requested to place this question on notice.

The McGowan government is delivering an unprecedented increase to police officer numbers, with an additional 950 on top of attrition being recruited over four years starting from 2020–21. This equates to a 15 per cent increase in police officer numbers, the largest single increase ever, and builds on the additional officers delivered in the first term of the McGowan government, including for the meth border force and regional enforcement unit.
