Parliamentary Questions

Question On Notice No. 2077 asked in the Legislative Council on 9 April 2019 by Hon Nick Goiran

Question Directed to the: Minister for Education and Training
Parliament: 40 Session: 1

Question

I refer to the Minister's media release on 16 October 2017 announcing the introduction of safety planning protocols for school-aged sex offenders, and I ask:
(a) have agencies been meeting to examine all possible risk factors of the alleged offender attending a public school;
(b) if yes to (a), on what dates have such meetings taken place since the introduction of the protocols;
(c) has the notification process for Catholic and Independent schools now been finalised;
(d) if yes to (c), when was this finalised; and
(e) further to (c), what is the notification process?

Answered on 4 June 2019

Answer

(a)   Yes.

(b)   As per the protocols, each individual risk assessment meeting occurs with identified agencies after notification from the Western Australia Police Force. Records of the meetings, including dates, are not maintained centrally.

(c)   Yes.

(d)   9 August 2018

(e)   Independent Schools: The Deputy Director General, Schools, forwards police notifications to the Director, Non-Government School Regulation, Department of Education. The Director then contacts the governing body of the relevant school to provide the notification and supporting safety planning documentation, and may provide contact information of relevant agencies.

       Catholic Schools: The Deputy Director General, Schools, forwards police notifications to the Executive Director, Catholic Education Western Australia. The Executive Director contacts the relevant school to provide the notification and supporting safety planning documentation, and may provide contact information of relevant agencies.
